Dana Schurmans is a doctoral candidate at the Université Catholique de Louvain (UCL) and the Free University of Brussels (VUB). In her doctoral thesis she explores the narratives of “digital inclusion” of socially disadvantaged youth living in Brussels.
She holds a master’s degree in communication sciences from the VUB. She is an associated researcher at “iMec- SMIT (Studiecentrum Media en Informatie-Technologie) – VUB” and at “Institut Langage et Communication (ILC) – Pôle de recherche en communication – UCL”, where she has worked on various research in the field of digital inclusion. She has carried out policy analysis, exectuted case study research and conducted qualitative interviews.
In addition to her academic work, Dana is active as Digital inclusion expert for “Africa, Caribbean and Pacific Young Professionals Network” (ACP YPN). In this context, she has influenced EU legislation on the topic to ensure digital policy remains inclusive, has been invited to panels on ICT4D and she has written blog posts on this topic.
Striving for equality and social justice in a digitized world are both part of her vocation and avocation.
